Shear Care and Maintenance

The cutting ability of any shear can be adversely affected if not maintained properly and on a regular basis. The following list of shear care and maintenance tips can help to keep shears in top shape.

  • A few drops of oil applied daily at the pivot point will ensure smooth and consistent trimming action.
  • Make it a point to become familiar and comfortable with regularly making tension adjustments. Avoid setting the tension too tight as this could quickly wear out the cutting edges of the shear blades. If you set the tension to loose then you risk hair bending as opposed to cutting. A properly tensioned sheer should not close all the way but rather remain slightly open.
  • Shears should be wiped down after every hair cutting session. Carefully inspect the pivot point and clear out any left over hair or debris that may have accumulated.
  • Always store shears in a case or wrapped in a soft towel. Shears left out in the open or loose within a drawer are susceptible to dings and damage which ultimately affects performance. Most Oster brand shears include a tri fold case, oiler and cleaning chamois.
  • Shears should be sharpened on a regular basis to always maintain the best possible performance.

Adhering to these tips and suggestions will ensure years of reliable shear usage and optimal performance.
